If you are considering couples counseling you probably have thoughts of worry because admitting your relationship is in a downfall is a hard thing to do. It does not mean you will be in counseling forever when you do decide to work on your relationship nor does it mean your relationship is completely over. Basically when you consider couples counseling, it is a sign of commitment to the relationship with you and you partner understanding that your relationship is important and is worth the time and effort.
Couples counseling is not about blaming the other person nor is it to get criticized by the therapist; the process is much different with one collaboration, understanding and respect. The three of you will work to understand what exactly is going wrong in the relationship and in a short period of time, start making changes.
Often enough a couple will get into a negative cycle of arguments which is hard to recover from; during those exact fights, it is extremely difficult to hear your partner or to even have your partner understand you. In many cases, over a long period of time, couples will begin to give up and think things will never come to a change.
First and foremost, do not let the arguments continue; if you have an argument you should save it for your next session so that the counselor can help the two of you resolve the disagreement.
Multiple couples are too scared to even seek help for couples counseling because they believe that means their relationship has failed or it is doomed; but, you need to understand that, that is not true. When the two of you decide to go to couples counseling, it is actually a declaration that your relationship is important and worth the time and effort to work on. A therapist is there to provide a safe, respectful environment where both of you can connect and communicate safely. The counselor is not there to blame or criticize you, but to act as a consultant to the relationship to find the most effective ways to allow the two of you to connect.
Do not worry; your relationship can and will be improved. Only after a few sessions, you will most likely notice changes in the relationship.
